PRIMARY STUDENTS
There are four main concepts for Primary Students in Music Education:
SINGING - Students begin by listening to the teacher sing simple intervals, and repeat back (Call and Response). As the year progresses, longer songs are introduced with more lyrics. Part of each class is spent learning Solfege, to help students become better listeners and singers. Did you know that singing is 90% listening skills?
LISTENING - All students benefit from improving their listening skills. Students are encouraged to be "Active Listeners", which is part of the school-wide Responsive Classroom initiative.
MOVEMENT - There is movement/dance incorporated in every music class. Students are encouraged to move to the "steady beat" of the music, to express themselves creatively, especially during "free dance" time.
INSTRUMENTS - Primary students are introduced to percussion instruments, beginning with Boom Whackers. Proper technique is introduced at this level for all percussion instruments.
FUN!! - I want ALL students to develop a love for music and dance and feel comfortable singing and dancing in front of their peers.
PRE-KINDERGARTEN
Music class is 30 minutes long. There are many activities planned for each class, depending on the students ability in each Pre-K class.
KINDERGARTEN
Kindergarten students will be performing in June a thematic unit of study, which incorporates all Allied Arts classes. The performance date is TBA.
GRADES 1 AND 2
Students in First and Second grade will perform their annual Winter Songfest on December 19th in the EKW Gymnasium. Second grade performance begins at 10:00 am. First grade performance begins at 2:00 pm.
